BACKGROUNDING AND EDUCATION ON SUBSEA CABLING:
Developers, Regulators, EPC's and interested third parties often have questions about how subsea cables are installed, maintained and the impact these activities have on the seabed and surrounding environment. There is a report published jointly by The United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre and the International Cable Protection Committee that provides an excellent overview of these issues. Although its focus is primarily focused on telecommunications cables, much of the information is directly applicable to power cables as well.
The UNEP-WCMC report "Submarine cables and the oceans: connecting the world" provides a in-depth overview and education on the history, process, surveying, international law, environmental impacts and future of the subsea cable industry. The report also include an industry glossary, including a listing of common acronymns and abbreviations.
